STUD BOLTS FOR FLANGE CONNECTIONS
A stud bolt is a headless threaded fastener commonly assembled with a heavy hex nut at each end. Stud bolts generate the clamping force needed to compress the gasket and maintain the integrity of a flanged joint.
They are widely used with pipe flanges, valves, pumps, pressure vessels, heat exchangers, strainers and pipeline components.
The required diameter, quantity and length depend on the flange size, pressure class, facing, gasket thickness, washers and insulation kit components. Fastener selection should also consider operating temperature, process conditions, corrosion exposure and required bolt preload.
Available configurations include fully threaded stud bolts, double-end studs, tap-end studs and threaded rods.
COMMON STUD BOLT MATERIAL GRADES
ASTM A193 B7 Stud Bolts
ASTM A193 Grade B7 is a chromium-molybdenum alloy steel bolting grade commonly used for high-pressure and high-temperature applications. It is widely specified for refineries, petrochemical plants, process piping, valves and pressure equipment.
ASTM A193 B7 stud bolts are commonly paired with ASTM A194 Grade 2H heavy hex nuts.
ASTM A193 B7M Stud Bolts
ASTM A193 Grade B7M has controlled strength and hardness requirements. It is often specified with ASTM A194 Grade 2HM nuts for applicable sour-service conditions.
Using B7M bolting does not automatically establish complete NACE MR0175/ISO 15156 compliance. Material hardness, manufacturing, coating and certification requirements must also be evaluated.
ASTM A320 L7 & L7M Stud Bolts
ASTM A320 Grade L7 is intended for low-temperature service and may be used in LNG facilities, gas-processing plants, cold-service pipelines and refrigeration systems. It is commonly paired with ASTM A194 Grade 7 nuts.
L7M bolting has restricted hardness requirements and is commonly paired with ASTM A194 Grade 7M nuts where specified.
Stainless Steel Fasteners
ASTM A193 B8 and B8M fasteners provide corrosion resistance for chemical, offshore and marine applications. B8 generally corresponds to Type 304 stainless steel, while B8M corresponds to Type 316.
The required class must be specified because Class 1 and Class 2 have different manufacturing and mechanical-property requirements.
HEX BOLTS AND U-BOLTS
Hex-head bolts are available in fully or partially threaded configurations for equipment, machinery, skids, pipe supports and structural assemblies.
U-bolts secure pipes to structural members, supports, guides or pipe shoes. They may be supplied with nuts, washers, plates, rubber lining, PTFE lining or insulating sleeves.
Custom U-bolts should be manufactured according to an approved drawing stating the pipe size, rod diameter, inside width, inside height, leg length, thread length and coating.
FASTENER STANDARDS AND THREADS
Applicable standards may include:
- ASTM A193 for high-temperature or high-pressure bolting
- ASTM A194 for compatible heavy hex nuts
- ASTM A320 for low-temperature bolting
- ASTM A453 for selected high-temperature applications
- ASTM A307 for carbon steel bolts and threaded rods
- ASME B1.1 for Unified inch screw threads
- DIN 976 for threaded rods
- ISO 4014 and ISO 4017 for metric hex-head bolts
Common thread series include UNC, UNF and 8UN, as well as metric coarse and fine threads. Large-diameter flange stud bolts frequently use 8UN threads, but the correct thread must follow the flange standard and project specification.
STUD BOLT COATINGS
Available finishes and protective coatings may include:
- PTFE or fluoropolymer coating
- Xylan or Xylar coating
- Zinc or zinc-nickel plating
- Hot-dip galvanising
- Phosphate coating
- Black oxide
- Ceramic coating
- Plain or black finish
Coating selection should consider environmental exposure, temperature, corrosion resistance, thread fit and installation requirements.
Coating and lubrication affect friction between the fastener components. The approved tightening torque must therefore be appropriate for the supplied coating and lubricant to achieve the required bolt preload.
