Falak Engineering Sdn Bhd supplies line blanks for oil and gas, petrochemical, refinery, pipeline, power generation and industrial piping systems throughout Malaysia.

LINE BLANKS FOR PIPELINE ISOLATION
Line blanks are installed between mating pipe flanges to provide visible physical isolation or maintain an open flow path. They are commonly used during plant maintenance, shutdowns, pressure testing, equipment replacement, commissioning and pipeline modifications.
Line blanks form part of a complete isolation arrangement. Installation, rotation and removal must follow the facility’s approved depressurisation, draining, lockout and safety procedures.
TYPES OF LINE BLANKS
Spectacle Blind
A spectacle blind combines a solid blank and an open spacer in one figure-8-shaped component.
The solid section is positioned between the flanges to isolate the pipeline. The open ring is used when normal flow is required. Its shape provides a clear visual indication of whether the line is open or isolated.
Spectacle blinds are generally suitable where isolation is performed regularly and sufficient space is available to rotate the component safely.
Spade or Paddle Blind
A spade, also known as a paddle blind, is a solid circular plate with an extended handle. It is inserted between two flanges to block the pipeline bore and provide positive isolation.
Spades are frequently selected for larger pipe sizes or higher pressure classes where a one-piece spectacle blind would be difficult to rotate or handle.
Spacer or Paddle Spacer
A spacer is an open ring with a handle that maintains the flange gap while allowing fluid to pass through the pipeline. It is installed when the corresponding spade is removed.
A matching spade and spacer should have compatible thicknesses so they can be exchanged without significantly changing the flange spacing or piping alignment.
Custom Line Blanks
Custom and drawing-based line blanks may be manufactured for sizes above the ASME B16.48 range, special flange standards, unusual pressure classes, restricted installation spaces or non-standard materials.
Custom products should be supplied according to approved drawings and applicable design requirements.
ASME B16.48 LINE BLANKS
ASME B16.48 is the principal dimensional standard for steel spectacle blinds, paddle blanks and paddle spacers installed between ASME flanges.
Its standard scope includes NPS ½ through NPS 24 in:
- Class 150
- Class 300
- Class 600
- Class 900
- Class 1500
- Class 2500
The standard establishes requirements for dimensions, thickness, facing, tolerances, materials and markings.
Line blanks larger than NPS 24 or outside the specified pressure classes generally require an approved project-specific or manufacturer design.
RAISED FACE AND RTJ LINE BLANKS
Raised Face line blanks are designed for use between compatible raised-face flanges. The gasket arrangement, sealing surface and dimensional allowances must match the piping specification.
Ring Type Joint line blanks are intended for compatible RTJ flange connections. Their machined sealing surfaces must match the flange groove and specified gasket arrangement.
Raised Face and RTJ line blanks are not interchangeable. The correct facing should always be stated in the purchase description.
LINE BLANK MATERIALS
Common materials include:
- Carbon steel plate: ASTM A516 Grades 60, 65 and 70
- Forged carbon steel: ASTM A105 or A105N
- Low-temperature forged steel: ASTM A350 LF2
- Stainless steel: ASTM A240 Types 304, 304L, 316 and 316L
- Duplex steel: ASTM A240 UNS S31803 and S32205
- Super duplex steel: ASTM A240 UNS S32750 and S32760
- Alloy and nickel alloys for specialised applications
Material selection must consider the design pressure, temperature, process medium, flange material and piping specification. Low-temperature impact testing, NACE compliance and corrosion-testing requirements should be confirmed during the enquiry stage.
LINE BLANK IDENTIFICATION
Line blank handles may be marked to identify:
- Blank or spacer condition
- Nominal pipe size
- Pressure class
- Material grade
- Heat number
- Applicable standard
- Manufacturer
- Project tag number
Colour coding and custom handle arrangements may also be supplied according to plant identification requirements.
