FORGED FLANGES FOR INDUSTRIAL PIPING SYSTEMS

Pipe flanges create detachable connections between pipes, valves, pressure vessels and equipment. They allow piping systems to be installed, inspected, maintained or modified without permanently cutting the pipe.

The correct flange must be selected according to its type, size, pressure class, material grade, facing, bore, dimensional standard and operating conditions. Gaskets, stud bolts and connecting components must also be compatible with the flange specification.

TYPES OF PIPE FLANGES

Weld Neck Flanges

Weld neck flanges have a tapered hub and are butt-welded directly to the pipe. They are commonly used for critical piping systems involving high pressure, temperature, vibration or cyclic loading. The flange bore should match the connected pipe schedule.

Slip-On Flanges

Slip-on flanges slide over the pipe and are normally secured with internal and external fillet welds. They provide straightforward alignment and installation for lower-pressure industrial services where permitted by the piping specification.

Blind Flanges

Blind flanges have no centre bore and are used to terminate or isolate pipelines, valves, vessels and equipment nozzles. Common applications include pressure testing, maintenance access and future piping extensions.

Socket Weld and Threaded Flanges

Socket weld flanges are commonly used in small-bore, high-pressure piping systems. Threaded flanges connect to threaded pipes without circumferential welding and may be used for selected utility services or locations where welding is restricted.

Lap Joint and Long Weld Neck Flanges

Lap joint flanges are installed with stub ends and can rotate to simplify bolt-hole alignment. Long weld neck flanges have extended hubs and are frequently used for pressure vessels, tanks and equipment nozzles.

Orifice and Large-Diameter Flanges

Orifice flanges are used with orifice plates for flow measurement and are generally manufactured according to ASME B16.36. Large-diameter flanges are commonly supplied according to ASME B16.47 Series A or Series B for pipelines, terminals and major process systems.

FLANGE STANDARDS AND RATINGS

Common ASME pressure classes include Class 150, 300, 400, 600, 900, 1500 and 2500. EN flanges may be supplied in PN6, PN10, PN16, PN25, PN40, PN63 and PN100.

Available facings include Raised Face, Flat Face and Ring Type Joint. Male-and-female, tongue-and-groove and project-specific facings may also be sourced.

Flanges manufactured to different standards or ASME B16.47 series are not necessarily interchangeable. The applicable standard must therefore be clearly stated in the purchase specification.

FLANGE MATERIAL GRADES

Available forged flange materials include:

  • Carbon steel: ASTM A105 and A105N
  • Low-temperature carbon steel: ASTM A350 LF2 and other specified A350 grades
  • High-yield carbon steel: ASTM A694 F42 to F70
  • Alloy steel: ASTM A182 F5, F9, F11, F22 and F91
  • Stainless steel: ASTM A182 F304, F304L, F316 and F316L
  • Duplex and super duplex: ASTM A182 F51, F53, F55, F60 and F61

Material selection should follow the piping class, design temperature, pressure, corrosion allowance and service environment. Impact testing, heat treatment, hardness limitations and NACE requirements should be specified during the enquiry stage.
