INDUSTRIAL GASKETS FOR FLANGE CONNECTIONS

A gasket seals the space between mating flange surfaces to help prevent liquids or gases from escaping. Reliable sealing depends on the complete bolted-joint assembly, including the flange design, gasket material, operating conditions, bolt load, flange alignment and installation method.

No single gasket is suitable for every application. Selection should follow the piping specification and consider pressure, temperature, process fluid, flange facing and material compatibility.

SPIRAL WOUND GASKETS

Spiral wound gaskets are manufactured from alternating layers of formed metal strip and soft filler. Their resilient construction makes them suitable for piping systems exposed to pressure and temperature changes.

They are widely used in refineries, petrochemical plants, power stations, pressure vessels, valves, pumps and heat exchangers. Spiral wound gaskets are commonly manufactured according to ASME B16.20 for ASME B16.5 and B16.47 flanges.

Available styles include:

Style R without an outer ring
Style RIR with an inner ring
Style CG with an outer centring ring
Style CGI with inner and outer rings

Common winding materials include stainless steel 304, 316L, 321, 347, duplex, super duplex, Inconel and Monel. Filler materials include flexible graphite and PTFE.

RING TYPE JOINT GASKETS

Ring Type Joint, or RTJ, gaskets are precision-machined metallic rings designed for matching grooves in RTJ flanges. They are commonly used for high-pressure and high-temperature applications in offshore facilities, refineries, pipelines, wellheads and API 6A equipment.

Available RTJ profiles include Type R oval, Type R octagonal, Type RX and Type BX. The profile and ring number must match the flange groove and applicable standard.

Common materials include soft iron, low-carbon steel, stainless steel, duplex, Inconel and Monel. The gasket material should generally be softer than the flange groove to allow controlled deformation during tightening.

RTJ gaskets should not normally be reused because installation permanently deforms their sealing surfaces.

FLANGE INSULATION GASKET KITS

Flange insulation gasket kits electrically isolate mating flanges and help control galvanic corrosion, stray currents and interference with cathodic protection systems.

A complete kit normally includes an insulating gasket, bolt sleeves, insulating washers and steel backing washers. Common configurations include Type E full-face, Type F raised-face and Type D for compatible RTJ grooves.

Available materials may include phenolic laminate, G10, G11, PTFE and modified PTFE. Selection should consider dielectric strength, pressure, temperature, chemical compatibility and water absorption.

NON-METALLIC AND SPECIAL GASKETS

CNAF Gaskets

Compressed Non-Asbestos Fibre gaskets are manufactured from synthetic fibres, fillers and elastomeric binders. They are commonly used for compatible water, air, oil, fuel, steam and utility services.

PTFE Gaskets

PTFE gaskets offer broad chemical resistance for corrosive-fluid piping, chemical-processing systems and contamination-sensitive services. Available forms include virgin, filled, expanded and modified PTFE.

Flexible Graphite Gaskets

Flexible graphite gaskets provide thermal stability for many steam, hydrocarbon and high-temperature applications. They may be supplied with stainless steel or tang inserts for additional strength.

Rubber Gaskets

Rubber gasket materials include EPDM, NBR, neoprene, silicone and FKM. Each material provides different resistance to temperature, oils, chemicals, weather and ageing.

Kammprofile and Metal-Jacketed Gaskets

Kammprofile gaskets combine a serrated metal core with graphite or PTFE facing layers. Metal-jacketed gaskets use a soft filler enclosed by a metallic jacket. Both types are frequently used in heat exchangers, pressure vessels and critical equipment.
